Students

This year, for the first time, a student scheme is being offered as part of the Simon Cumbers Media Fund. Under this scheme, third-level students will be encouraged to submit a media proposal focusing on development issues.

Two awards will be granted: one in a ‘Print’ category and one in a ‘Broadcast’ category and all entries will be assessed by a judging panel made up of representatives from Irish Aid, the Cumbers’ family, and individual media experts.

Successful students will be awarded with an opportunity to travel to a developing country to research and produce their media project. In addition, applicants will also have the chance to see their work broadcast or published in a national media outlet once they had produced their final project. To this end, Newstalk is the media partner for the broadcast project, while The Irish Times is the media partner for the print project.

Successful students will also receive guidance and mentoring from journalists within two of Ireland’s leading media organisations: Newstalk Producer, Susan Cahill and The Irish Times, Foreign Policy Editor, Paddy Smyth.

Applications for the Fund can be sent by post to: Simon Cumbers Media Fund, c/o DHR Communications, PO Box 11827, Dublin 8. Applications by email should be sent to info@simoncumbersmediafund.ie.

The closing date for receipt of applications is 5pm on Friday, 10th February 2012. Applications will be accepted by post or email.

All applicants are advised to read the guidelines before submitting their application form. These documents are available to download:
