Song from the Slum: Kenya – Brian Kenny
In 2009, Brian Kenny received funding under the Simon Cumbers Media Fund. He documented the relationship between a young musician from Dublin’s Northside and homeless musician from Nairobi.
In mid-2009 ‘Steo’ – from the Hip Hop group the Infomatics – travelled to Kenya to meet another Hip Hop artist, Simo, who lived on open ground in one of Nairobi’s slums. To survive Simo collected plastic bottles in rubbish dumps so he could sell for recycling while he worked on his music at night.
The radio documentary compared the differences between the men’s daily life and how their environment had influenced their music.
The outcome of this project was a radio documentary that was broadcasted on RTÉ Radio 1, Documentary on One programme on 16th January 2010 at 6pm.
